Public sector textile univ soon: Hossain Zillur

Staff Correspondent

The government will set up a public textile university in Dhaka and will soon approve the proposal for a private university, said the commerce and education adviser, Hossain Zillur Rahman on Sunday.

The adviser pledged all supports for similar initiatives in the private sector as industries in Bangladesh faced a shortage of skilled and mid- and top-level managers and technical people.

‘The textile institute at Tejgaon in Dhaka will soon be upgraded to a university. A similar university proposed by the Bangladesh Garment and Manufacturers’ Association will be also approved,’ Zillur said as he inaugurated a workshop on the development of packaging industry in Bangladesh.

The inauguration of the workshop, organised by the Bangladesh Quality Support Programme, was addressed by the National Board of Revenue chairman, Abdul Mazid and Bangladesh Carton and Packaging Materials Manufactures and Exporters’ Association president Shafiullah Chowdhury.

Jacky Charbonneau, senior adviser to the International Trade Centre, a partner of the quality support programme, also spoke.

Mazid said the government had always supported the growing export industries, but industries should remain alert against any misuse of the facilities.

Citing mandatory labelling of imported accessories for export industries, Mazid said the regulation might have created a little inconvenience, but it had to be done as such bonded imports were leaking out into local markets.
